  • Physics and astronomy are small programs, housed in a small school, offering small classes. Instructors get to know the students well and provide individualized attention that large universities can’t offer.

  • All physics majors and astronomy/physics double majors are required to work with a faculty mentor on a senior project.
  • Summer internship and research programs both on and off campus offer abundant possibilities for learning outside the classroom.
  • The department boasts extremely dedicated faculty with excellent pedagogy, many of whom have been honored and recognized for their excellence. Physics & Astronomy faculty includes winners of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award and the SUNY Distinguished Teaching Award.
  • Whether students intend to enter graduate school, the workforce, or pursue teaching, the department guides them in tailoring their academics to their individual aspirations.
  • The astronomy program, which focuses on hands-on experience rather than advanced mathematical/theoretical techniques, offers the Jack Smolen Observatory and the John R. Kirk Planetarium for the education of students and the local community.
